We did it! Thanks to everyone who donated to, shared, and followed along my Team Vogel vs. Cancer fundraising campaign this summer as I trained for and ran the Mt. Desert Island Marathon earlier this month! Because of your support, we were able to smash our goal of $2,620 by raising an amazing $3,091.80 to help offset medical costs for families battling cancer in the Winona area. Thank you for paying it forward in honor of Joe!

Regarding running the actual race on October 14th, I thought the Mt. Desert Island Marathon was a great success and absolutely gorgeous - easily one of the most beautiful races I've ever run. The day couldn't have been more perfect with sunny skies and peak fall colors shining bright. Couple that with my race number being 429, which is Joe and my sister's birthday, I knew something special was in store. Being a smaller race, I decided to toe the line with the top runners and put up a good challenge over the 26.2 mile course. So I gave it all I had. I ran through small harbor towns and up and down tree-topped hills from Bar Harbor through Acadia National Park to Southwest Harbor. The water stations and cheer zones were loud and welcoming, as was each time I waved to my family on the side of the road. A highlight was running by a fishing boat that was blaring its horn and some music on Somes Sound, which was a great respite from the otherwise fairly quiet, serene route along the island coast. In the end, I chugged toward the finish line with a fist in the air extremely satisfied with how the race went. I finished in 3 hours, 12 minutes and 20 seconds (7:21/mi), 30th place out of 737 marathoners, and 1st in my age group. Wahoo!!

With your support, the loving company of my wife and parents, and a never-ending diet of fresh seafood and spaghetti, I think we can consider this endeavor a success. Thank you again for believing in me and honoring my cousin Joe in such amazing ways. You're all a big part of why we should keep paying it forward!
