Leaping into 2016...

1/31/2016

I was inspired to share some thoughts when I was updating the Team Vogel web site, and realized it is also a leap year.  The moment made me pause and think about what it takes to make a leap... in your personal life, in your job, in what you are passionate about.

Sometimes the leap feels like such a good idea, until the landing...

Sometimes getting the courage to take the leap results in the most wonderful landing of all.
Picture
Think about when you graduated from high school, from college, when you first told someone "I love you", wondering if you should retire; all the times you weren't sure about the outcome, but had high hopes of success!

When I think about our families who are fighting for the lives of those they love, when faced with a diagnosis of cancer, I think about the leaps that will be faced medically, personally, and spiritually.  And I am humbled by the strength of these individuals.

So, I shall keep taking the leaps of faith that somehow our events will continue to generate enough funding, so we can always be ready to help when an application is received by the Team Vogel vs Cancer board.  This team that Joe started, on his own leap of faith, is what makes it possible to provide that soft landing for families in need.

Thank you leapers everywhere.

In our efforts to improve the support given to Winona area families dealing with cancer, this year the Team changed from annual distribution of funds raised, to an application that provides financial support more immediately.  It has been a great change, and so far 12 families have been assisted through the ongoing generosity of this community.  The need continues, and to meet that need, Team Vogel offers a fun new event this fall:  The Not Quite Formal Fall Frolic.

The idea grew from the fun loving spirit of one of our new board members, Christine Windsor, who is a breast cancer survivor herself.  Christine loves music, lots of people, and a chance to dance.  Even if you don't get excited about dancing, the Black Horse offers a great place to watch the fun and enjoy an evening with friends.

Don't let Barbie and Ken outshine you!  Dress up to the max, or come in those comfy jeans that let you move and groove on the dance floor, or enjoy a cool beverage as you watch from the balcony above.

Joe loved music and dancing.  I know he is going to be out there with us busting a move and rocking the night away.  Forever in our hearts, and a smile when we remember just how really "special" you were...  Think this picture says it all.

Introducing the Board, Basketball Fun, and Invite to Dance!

Greetings to Team Vogel!
The fall used to be our "quiet time", when we had wrapped up summer events, and not yet started full planning for the next year... but 2015 brought new board members, new ideas, and new energy to help the Team continue to Pay It Forward.  Support from the community, and everyone who has come to believe in the power of working together, continues to provide much needed assistance to families in the Winona area who are dealing with cancer.  The new application process is allowing the support to be available year round.  Joe would be proud.

We all have different things that drive us.  I've always loved dressing up.  Halloween is one of my favorite days - school dress up days are way up there too.  So the best way for me to recap events and prepare for upcoming is to share my wardrobe.  Don't be afraid to add some flair to your life with your choice of clothing :).

Event recaps are up and ready for viewing under 2015 Events (or click on the link below).

Just a quick note about the Hot Dog Stand too...  If you would like to help serve up some dogs - please email TeamVogelvsCancer@gmail.com and don't forget to get your orders in if you would like lunch delivered (This helps us make sure we have enough drivers :).)

Believe in the magic of a good outfit.

A Great Week for a Brew Review...

Alright Crew - I just looked at the forecast for the week and Thursday looks like a pretty amazing day to sample some beer :).  Hoping you can make it and try some (if you're a real go-getter and HAVE A RIDE HOME - possibly all) of the 100+ beers that will be at the event.

A Race that Gets Me...

Picture
The Fools Five Gets Me...  It gets me every year.  When they ask for anyone who has battled or is currently battling cancer to remain standing and the everyone else to take a knee...  It kills me.  I wish there were a few people standing beside me at that time.

I also have to embrace the spirit that is at this event.  It's one I won't miss and one all of you should make an effort to try.  This year I had some of my favorites with.  I definitely found myself a little out of shape and at one point I said, "I think I'm dying."  My (widow) friend Wade said to me, " Nope = you're living.  You can feel the pain and you're out here running."

I hate smart people with perspective when you can barely breath :).  But man is he right!
Picture

Picture
(Left) My all time best running partner!  (Above)  My texting workout team.  Mind you this is within the first 1/2 mile of the race.
Picture
This last note should fall into the ...A Note from Rach section - but I want to include it here :).  Since venturing off a little from Winona, I realized this winter / beginning of spring, how much I miss my running partner, Sami, and other Winona folk that enjoy being out.

I needed help motivating myself and getting back out there (whether it be running - biking - walking ...)  I gathered some friends and we all text one another when we workout / do something active.  This may seem ridiculous...  but seriously it is motivating for me.  When a text comes through saying, "I just did 3 miles..."  It motivates me to plan a time to get a run in.

Just some food for thought...

...And a Note from Rach.

Well - what would a Sunday be without a little Funday :)...

So - one of my good friends (an adopted sibling), who goes on Boundary Waters Adventures with our group, had the brilliant idea to work on our cocktail mixtures in the off season.  Today we tested out dehydrated Bloody Marys...
Picture
Picture
Picture
We have a little bit of work ahead of us.  The first sampling went well, but we feel we do not have our process down.  We will continue to perfect our methods.

It's pretty amazing what one can dehydrate...

And my last note - make sure to love the ones that are important to you everyday.  Maybe a note - a text - an email - a call...  Or a snuggle in the morning.

Cheers and Hoping to See Many of You on Thursday!

Team Vogel Update...

The new Board of Directors is busy adding members, formally organizing, and planning to expand and improve the mission Joe started 5 years ago.  Look for an introduction to the official board members in May, and another great season of a community coming together to support cancer research, and families dealing with cancer.

Typically I find myself working independently or hanging with an older crowd (on a beach with a beverage in my hand...).  This week I switched things up and am hanging with the a younger gal.  Trying to bring back my youth a little.  It has been a blast (I'm two days in...) but let me tell you - Moms and Dads are AMAZING!

My first day I struggled getting myself lunch (I just grabbed cold things from the fridge and shoved them in my mouth...) and didn't even have a chance to go to the bathroom.

Today I discovered what one form of true love is - whipping a really snotty nose with your sleeve.  It was a little juicier than I expected - but don't worry I just rolled the cuff over it and made it disappear...Sorta.

Excited to see what adventures tomorrow brings.  And just for the record, I am not ignoring the child - the head parent is home :).

XOXO

All proceeds will go the Team Vogel and Super Gav.

A great opportunity to clean out cans from your garage and support two great groups in Winona!

ALL OF THE BOWLERS and CHEERLEADERS ...and those who hide behind the scenes helping make everything run smooth.  Truly this is one of my favorite events - a smile never leaves my face.

And here's one of my favorite photos...

...and a note from Rach.

Life gets busy...We get tired...Things get set aside...Phone calls are not always made...  But some things are too important to set aside.

I've always been a family person.  Heck - I called my mother everyday, sometimes 2 times a day when I was in college.  And this is truly amazing, for back when I was in college I had to use a calling card :).  (I actually ended up memorizing the number and code - ridiculous I know...)

It has always been important for me to stay connected.  It's not always easy, but I feel there are ways...

Recently my mom - sister - niece and I started a "Sunday Funday" photo share.  Every Sunday, we share a photo with each other (by text).  It can be anything.  Something we did during the week - something we're doing - something we saw - something to make us all laugh...  Regardless of the photo, it makes each of us take a moment to reach out.  (We started off a little shaky...but this past "Sunday Funday" we were 4/4 for participation.)

This is such a small thing, but to me it means a lot.

For the record - my phone calls to mom have decreased, but some days you just need your mom.  And heck - I've named my sister my asSIStant...so her phone rings a bit too.  I know they always smile when they see it's me and they never silence me...

Hoping you can make your own "Sunday Funday".

Signing off.

Hugs -
Rach

PS - This may be cheating, but if you have any great photos I can use for "Sunday Funday" - send them my way :).

2015 Change = Better... Bowling... And A Few Rach Things.

2015 Change = Better...

There are good things coming…because we want to do more, better!

2015 will be a year of change for Team Vogel, focused on determining how we can do more to support local families and cancer research efforts.

Here are some Exciting Changes for Team Vogel...

Focus for 2015:
  • Evolving the family support process - We will not be accepting Family Nominations this year.  We are working to create an application process that can be utilized by families throughout the year.  The Family Application will be available April 2015.  If you have a family in mind please email or call and we will contact you when the process is ready.
  • Establishment of a formal Board of Directors
  • Evaluating fundraising opportunities – to do more, better!

Please feel free to contact Team Vogel, with any questions, at teamvogelvscancer@gmail.com or call Amanda at 507-313-9163.

Bowling...

To kick off 2015...

The Fifth Annual Bowling Tournament has been scheduled for Saturday - January 31, 2015.
Picture
Please see the 2015 Events tab, on the website, for the official flyer including contact information.

There are 4 spots available for the 4pm shift.
There is always room for more kids or family bowling at 2pm.
The 7 pm shift is currently full...
BUT you are welcome to join in the fun and have a BURGER BASKET!

...And a Few Rach Things.

Well, with the closing of the holiday season, I am sure many of you are sitting on pins and needles wondering if Bea and Kevin finished decorating their tree.  I am proud to share their tropical tree with all of you....
Picture
Picture
Second, I came across these words of wisdom online the other day.

Always be Yourself.
Unless you can be a Unicorn.
Then always be a Unicorn.

And coupled with this comment my sister shared with me…

Never play leapfrog with a Unicorn.

We should now have all the knowledge we need to keep on going in 2015.

Here's to 2015!
-Rach

...and one last point to ponder...  Sometimes life gets a little busy.  Alright - it can get downright crazy.  What if we could just buy a new calendar and start fresh?  The calendar will be blank, so all the things you were suppose to do are no longer there... (I guess this won't work for all you tech people.  But for old school paper calendar people like me - maybe this is something we should consider?)
