I'm the Lucky One...

The past few days, I’ve had the opportunity to share Joe’s story and the story of Team Vogel.  It’s overwhelming and the most rewarding thing I can do for Joe.

On Thursday, I was invited to speak at Cotter by a group of 5 students who selected Team Vogel vs. Cancer as their “Real-Time” project for religion.  I was so honored they picked and wanted to help raise funds for Team Vogel and I was more than willing to do anything to help them out.  When they asked me to speak – I was all for it.  The night before, I found myself wondering what to share, where to begin…  I had some great guidance from my mother – she said - Tell them who Joe is and was.  So that I did.   I wish I could have had a camera to capture the expressions of the students.  They were completely captured by Joe, engaged, and most importantly – I hope Joe will live on through them.  By speaking – I may not reach everyone, but if I can reach 1 – “Pay it Forward” lives on.  Thank you to Claire, Hannah, Paige, Jennifer and Jacob for picking Team Vogel vs. Cancer and keeping Joe’s dream alive.  (I can’t wait to report a final total for their fundraising. )

Today – I was honored to be a part of the Winona Senior High School’s Winterfest festivities.  They honored everyday heroes this year.  It was a true honor to sit among other community members who choose to “Pay it Forward”.  Although I agreed to do this – I was frustrated the real hero, Joe, couldn’t be there.  I love to do these things in honor of him, but wish I could be the one watching him do them.  I miss being his cheerleader and tired of trying to be my own.  It’s just not the same…

For Joe’s family and those who knew Joe – he was quite the cheerleader himself.  He would often spell his last name out while doing a headstand in his parent’s living room…and yes he would chant the letters as he went.

Alright, time to get down to Team Vogel business.  Starting February 1st, we will be accepting nominations for families dealing with cancer and in need of help (from the Winona area).  If you know of a family, please feel free to nominate them using the online link on thehomepage.  We will be accepting nominations through March and will be selecting the families the first week of April.

Off to stretch for the Bowling Tournament.

Love - Rach

PS - I love to share pictures of Joe and I think these two pictures describe our relationship perfectly...  There are few pictures where the both of us were focused and smiling (not making a face).  These two pictures are from the morning of our second wedding - and yes - I did have to go home to help Joe style his hair :).

Somedays...The words are few.

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.  I had a great weekend with many of my favorite gals.  As I sit here staring at my computer screen, the words are not coming to me today - hang with me (I've hit the delete button 100 times and restarted this 5...)

So here are some thoughts for the week - I want to take a moment to thank all of you who help me everyday.  One of my ways to deal with life is to reflect and share all my memories of Joe.  I sometimes fear I will forget.  I don't want to ever forget.  So, I promise to talk about him everyday and I appreciate everyone who listens and shares their memories.  It is hard to live without your best friend.  Nothing can make it easier ...  but I choose to talk about him everyday so I will not forget.

A quick Joe story (I've shared with some already).  Last Tuesday night was a tough night.  I was pretty tough / mean to my mom.  I didn't mean to be and truly didn't even realize it, but I was evil.  SO - mom being great came over and we talked and I just realized life was getting the best of me at the moment.  I went to bed that night just feeling crappy and needing to chat with Joe.  I gave Zoe her 2 kisses and then her 1000 kisses to take with her is she goes before me...and then I looked up to say good night to Joe and tell him 143.  As soon as I looked up my ceiling fan began to spin.  I didn't hit the switch - I didn't do anything to cause this.  So the next night - I needed to try all this again and see if it was the humidifier or what...NOTHING.  Once again - I just need to believe.  Joe is always there - he just saves his moments to show himself.

Bowling Update - All shifts are full.  Thank you to everyone who signed up!  I want to invite everyone to attend even if you are not on a bowling team.  There will be plenty of laughter and fun for all.  A side note - if you have not paid for your team, please take care of that with Brad in a timely manner.

Well, signing off for the night and hoping all of you have a wonderful week.

Love - Rach

Upcoming Events tab.)

I would also like to highlight the Kid Bowling from 9 am - 10 am.  Everyone is welcome - please just let Brad know so we know how many to expect.

Questions or to register - contact Brad Bartelson
(507) 429-5462 or bradleybartelson@hotmail.com

The Store is OPEN...
I would like to draw your attention to the Store Tab.  The Team Vogel Store is stocked.  And I am excited to let you know - we have long sleeved Team Vogel shirts in.

Mary will be handling all orders and her contact information is listed on the Store page, but here it is again incase you have any questions.

Mary (507) 454-5912 or teamvogelmerchandise@hotmail.com

All proceeds generated go directly to the Team Vogel Fundraiser (Families Dealing with Cancer and Cancer Research).

A Real Treasure...
Notes are forever.  I cherish the notes Joe left me, the ones I kept since we met.  At the time I didn't know why, now it is the one thing I have to hold tight to - his words, his handwriting...his humor.  My mom was recently cleaning out an old tub and came across a note I left her in 1991.  It is priceless and I would love to share it with you.

"Mom, I got a hole in my pants.  So win you get mad take it out on my pants and sew them up please.  Love, Bugs"

I love it - to the point, a little whit, and great manners.  (Good news is - I now know win is spelt when.)

Hope this brings a smile your way.
Love and Hugs
Rach

Back to Minnesota...

I was fortunate to get the heck out of Minnesota and the cold this past week.  I am not sure if Puerto Rico was ready for our group or not, but we definitely left our mark :).

Two years ago, Joe and I joined this group in Mexico.  We had a blast and I have so many memories from the trip.  Traveling was always important to Joe and I and it remains important to me.  It was hard to be here without Joe... tough to sit on the plane and not be able to lean on my neighbor.. not having someone to laugh with in the wee-hours of the night, and mostly - I just missed seeing Joe laughing and enjoying himself - relaxed and in the sun.

So, as we pack to head out to the airport, I will share with you our trip by photos.

I guess Joe wanted to be in the picture too :).

Everytime Joe and I would be on vacation - we would find a chip truck.  I always thought he should request a transfer to a  warmer location.

    ...

Joe Vogel began his battle with cancer in 2006. He became a leader in his community and a hero among his friends and family. He made it his personal mission to help in the fight against cancer. His wife Rachel is carrying out his dream to help families dealing with cancer and to find a cure for this disease.
